152,416 words in a week: how Lexacom is changing a GP’s working day

Dr Abdul Rafay uses Lexacom Echo throughout his working day at Ashfields Medical Centre, from patient consultations to referrals and admin. In one week, Echo captured more than 150,000 words for him.

Dr Rafay sees around 28 patients across his morning and evening sessions, and uses Lexacom for all of them. Between sessions, he also uses it to help with administrative work, including referrals and letters.

His usage data shows the scale: in one week, Echo captured 152,416 words for Dr Rafay. At an average typing speed of 40 words per minute, typing that volume of text would take more than 63 hours. Even highly proficient typists at a speed of 80 words per minute would take almost 32 hours.

Saving an hour every day

Asked to estimate the difference Echo makes to his working day, Dr Rafay put the saving at at least half an hour per clinical session. Across his working day, he estimates that adds up to 45–60 minutes saved every day.

“I’m saving at least, I would say, 45 minutes to one hour every day with Lexacom. 100%.”

Dr Rafay describes dealing with dozens of blood results and prescriptions alongside his other daily tasks, so for GPs with substantial administrative workloads in addition to their clinical sessions, time savings really matter.

More attention for the patient

For Dr Rafay, the benefit during consultations is not simply about completing documentation more quickly.

Before using Echo, he would often type while speaking to a patient during the limited time available for each appointment. Now, he can concentrate on the conversation and the information in front of him, knowing Echo is capturing the details.

“I’m not typing it because Lexacom is doing the job for me.”

He believes this changes the interaction itself, allowing him to look directly at the patient rather than dividing his attention between the patient and the keyboard.

“I’m just focusing on the patient, and I know that Lexacom will pick up all the tiny details.”

From consultations to referrals

Echo has also become part of Dr Rafay’s workflow outside the consultation room.

Referrals are a particular strength. He says the referral template produces a level of formality that would be difficult to recreate through conventional dictation, while reducing the time needed to produce the document.

“The referral template is really, really good… It does save us a lot of time.”

That benefit extends beyond Dr Rafay himself. He estimates that five or six GPs at Ashfields are already using Echo, with some also using it for every consultation. Even colleagues who do not use it for consultations are using it to create referrals.

For Dr Rafay, Echo has become an everyday part of clinical practice rather than an occasional productivity tool.

“It’s really efficient and I love using it.”
