Ambient AI allows users to record live sessions, and process the transcription using Comprehension Engine®.
To use Ambient AI:
Launch the Ambient AI window by clicking the AI icon in the toolbar.
The Ambient AI page will look like this:
1. Select your template
Select your template from the available templates.
The templates available to you will depend on your Team.
The template you select may have certain properties – it may be configured for conversations between different speakers, or be set to capture your audio Output
Begin your recording by pressing the red record button.
Whilst recording, Ambient AI will show this animation:
You may stop and start your recording as many times as you like using the same button. When you have paused recording, you can start recording to add to the current session, or process the session you have recorded.
Ambient AI requires a minimum amount of recording before Comprehension Engine® can process a session (approximately 50 words). If you have not recorded enough, Ambient AI will display this message:
Subject Information (Optional)
The Subject information section allows you to add the details of a subject (e.g. patient, client, service user). Lexacom will use these details to influence the generated outputs, where appropriate. For example, it will use this information to ensure the correct spelling of the subject’s name throughout the outputs generated.
Expand this section by clicking the down chevron on the right.
You can fill this in manually and can clear the details by pressing ‘Clear subject’.
Note: If you are a clinical user with integration between Lexacom and your clinical system – you can automatically fill this information by clicking the ‘Get Patient Information’ button (see below).
3. Processing
Once you have finished recording and are ready to process, the ‘Generate’ button will appear.
Click this button to generate the output you have selected from the session you have captured.
The formatted transcription will appear below, like this:
You can edit and amend this as you need.
! Lexacom is designed to reduce the time you spend on admin, but not to replace your knowledge and experience. Please check all results for accuracy.
4. Using your Output

Lexacom Ambient AI can be linked to EMIS Web and SystmOne. This will allow you to receive patient information and update records from Lexacom. (find out more)
Make sure you have an active patient in your clinical system.
Use the ‘Get Patient Information’ button to pull the patient information in.
To change patient details, select a new patient in your clinical system and click ‘Get Patient Information’ again.
To clear patient details click ‘Clear Subject’.
Inserting into your Clinical System
Some templates are formatted to return sections corresponding to consultation notes in your clinical system. Lexacom allows you to submit the results to your clinical system without the need to copy and paste these individually. In this case, you will see a button with the name of your clinical system, e.g.
Click on the button and select Add Consultation Notes to submit these details to your clinical system.
A window will appear showing the details to be submitted – confirm that these are correct, and then click Submit to submit these to the system.
If the patient name is not visible at the top of this window, click ‘cancel’, select the patient in your clinical system, and try again.
5. Refining your Output
You can request Lexacom to make changes to your outputs using the Refine box at the bottom of the Ambient AI window:
Once you type your request into this box, the Refine button will appear. Click this for Lexacom to make these changes.
There is a limit to how many times you can use refine in quick succession. If you exceed this, you will see a usage limit message telling you how many seconds you need to wait before trying again.
6. Reprocessing
You may process your transcription any number of times with different session templates or regenerate the same output if you don’t like the first result. Select the new session template, and click Generate.
If you have made changes to the formatted transcription, these will not be retained when reprocessing.
You can record additional transcription to your current session, and process again, as many times as required.
7. Completion
Once you have completed your session, ensure that any formatted transcriptions have been copied and saved.
Click the ‘Clear Session’ button to clear your current session. Note: this action cannot be undone. Original or processed transcription is not retained once you have cleared the session.
You may then begin recording another session, work on workflow jobs, or use Echo Live to record transcription into other applications.
Original Transcription
If required, you can view the original, unformatted transcription that has been recorded. Click the Show Transcription switch to show this.
You can edit this – for example, to correct a spelling or transcription error. These changes will be retained and apply each time you process the transcription.
If you forgot to clear the previous session, you can delete it from here and retain the subsequent session to reprocess the output you need.
Note: If you erase the original transcription, this cannot be undone.
Note
If your screen does not look as shown above – you likely are using an older version of Lexacom. Please contact our support desk if you need help updating your software.
Watch the Video
Note: this is a generic video, the options available will depend on your team setup.
