“The problems associated with the use of the voice recognition platform were counter productive because they increased the time it was taking to make and process dictations. But with Lexacom, the speed with which information can be processed is excellent, particularly when we’re handling urgent letters.”

Catherine Barton, Practice Manager

Having struggled with a voice recognition-based dictation system which was frequently inaccurate and therefore unreliable, St Helen’s approached Lexacom to help them find the right solution.

What problems was the customer having?

The St Helens Medical Centre had a voice recognition dictation system already installed but the doctors had become disenchanted with its performance. They found there were too many inaccuracies when they had made a dictation and this meant they needed to thoroughly check the accuracy of patient records after making a dictation. This was increasing the amount of time spent on the dictation process, rather than reducing it.

Why did the customer choose Lexacom?

The practice manager, Catherine Barton, received a Lexacom flyer through the post and decided to investigate the merits of its digital dictation software further.

Did the customer take advantage of a free trial?

After sampling the software for a 30-day period, Catherine Barton decided to introduce the system on a small scale to further analyse its performance. The registrar that was working at the medical centre at the time was given the software to use and was immediately impressed with how easy it was to use.

What was the solution that was delivered by Lexacom?

The introduction of Lexacom’s digital dictation software was such a resounding success in the first instance that the GPs who were using the other voice recognition system were quick to demand a switch to Lexacom. Today, all of the doctors and a registrar at the St Helens Medical Centre use Lexacom and the software has also been installed on the computers of two typists and at a branch surgery.

What is the customer’s reaction after the installation?

“The people that are using Lexacom think it’s the best thing since sliced bread,” explained practice manager, Catherine Barton. “The problems associated with the use of the voice recognition platform were counter productive because they increased the time it was taking to make and process dictations.

“But with Lexacom, the speed with which information can be processed is excellent, particularly when we’re handling urgent letters. The software allows our typists to prioritise their workload and there’s a much more consistent flow of information coming from the doctors.”
